Week of Oct. 28

Last week started Red Ribbon Week.  The students got to tie ribbons around the fences, drew pictures of healthy things they can do to help them stay drug free, made our door decorations (mummies), and created a list of the "Top Ten Things to Do Instead of Drugs".  This week we will continue with Red Ribbon Week.  The students will be decorating apples and saying positive things about their classmates, pledging to be drug free, making thank you cards for the firemen, and writing and drawing pictures for someone they look up to.

In religion this week we will be defining the word commandment.  We will look specifically at the Great Commandment.  We will also talk about saints since All Saints Day is coming up.

This week we will finish up unit 3 of Adventures of Superkids.  Students will also read the next Super-Duper issue about bubbles.  We will begin unit 4 which will look at words with er and ed at the end.  We will read the story "In a Pickle" in our readers too.  We will also do some spelling games and activities to help us learn to spell our pattern and memory words.

In math this week we will look at the strategy counting on to find a sum, adding 0 to a number, and identifying more than one way to cover a design using pattern blocks.  We will also do some pumpkin math where the students will be weighing pumpkins, measuring the height of pumpkins, and estimating and counting the seeds of pumpkins.  We will also do some center math activities with a Halloween theme.

For science this week we will create our timeline, work on writing a dinosaur story using everything we have learned about dinosaurs, and continue to work on researching our individual dinosaurs for our dinosaur book.

Week of Oct. 21

Last week during religion the students really enjoyed making their own Eye of God to help them remember that God is always watching over us and caring for us.  Some students will finish theirs this week and take them home.  This week we will start talking about the Great Commandment.

In Superkids, we have started our third unit.  In this unit we will be focusing on words with ng and le.  We will also be reading more stories in our reader where we will look at reality versus fantasy and problem and solution.  The students are continuing to work on writing and answering questions.  We will also work on writing a story.  The students will also be playing some fall and Halloween games to practice letter sounds and spelling words.

Last week in math the students enjoyed creating pictures using q-tips.  They then counted up the number of q-tips used and then broke that number into tens and ones.  The pictures turned out really well.  This week we will continue working on adding 1 facts, weighing objects, and problem solving.  We will also play some of our math Halloween games.

This week students will finish creating their landform US map.  We will share our timelines and create a timeline of the earth showing when different plants, dinosaurs, and animals came.  We will also continue to work on researching our dinosaurs for our dinosaur book.

This week also will begin Red Ribbon Week.  It will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 23.  The students will be doing various activities to discuss staying drug free.

Week of Oct. 14

It was great to see all of the grandparents and grandpeople on Friday.  The students enjoyed showing them around the classroom, reading with them, and then having goodies with them.  Overall, it was a fun morning for everyone.

This week we will be continuing to talk about how God watches over us and cares for us.  We will also talk about how Jesus helped others and how we in turn can help others like Jesus.

In Superkids, we will finish up unit 2 and begin unit 3.  In unit 3 we will learn about words with /ng/ and /le/.  Students will also read their second Super-Duper magazine, "Shoes to Choose."  We will also work on asking, writing, and answering questions.

For math this week students will work on counting backwards, adding 1 facts, and time of day.  We are doing well on learning our double facts and will continue to practice them everyday.

Our dinosaur inquiry unit is going well and we are starting to talk about how the earth looked different when the dinosaurs were around.  This week we will continue looking at landforms in the US and creating our landform map.  We will also look at how plants and animals have changed over time by creating a timeline.

Last week, Friday, students began investigating the materials they will use to make their sailboats.  They looked at how the materials act in water, do they float or sink, and how they act with wind.  They were able to begin getting ideas for what materials they would like to use for their sailboats.  This week in lab, they will begin planning out their boat designs by drawing and labeling the materials they will use and how they will use them.

Week of Oct. 7

I can't believe it is already October.  We have been working hard and have settled in to our classroom routine.  This month we will be having fun doing different activities with a Halloween theme.

This month we will continue to talk about Mary and practice saying the Hail Mary.  This week we will also talk about John the Baptist, how Jesus shares God's love with others, and the story of Zacchaeus.  We will be reading stories from the Bible.

In Superkids, we are working on Unit 2 and th and wh words.  We are also talking about question words, writing and answering questions.  The students had fun getting up and doing basketball words to help practice spelling our spelling words (they pretend to dribble a basketball while spelling the word and then shoot the basketball as they say what word was spelled).  We will learn some other fun ways to move and spell throughout the year.  This week we will also be talking about characters and will be reading another story in our readers called "What a Pet!"  Remember you can also have your child practice reading the stories at home through the parent portal.

In math this week, we will continue working on our addition double facts, looking for patterns in story problems, working with pattern blocks to cover and make designs, ordering numbers to 20, adding 1 to a number, and writing subtraction number sentences.  Students will use wrap-ups to help practice double facts and will also be acting out some, some went away story problems.

For science this week we will begin looking at what the Earth looked like during the time of the dinosaurs as well as different kinds of landforms.  We will be using different videos and Google Earth to help look at these things.  Students will recreate what the Earth looked like during the times of the dinosaurs as well as create a map of the United States showing the different landforms that we have.
Last week students chose they dinosaur that they will be researching for our dinosaur book that we will be writing and having published at the end of our Dinosaur Unit.  This week we will continue to work on researching our dinosaurs.

Our innovation lab this week will have the students investigating different materials that they will later use to construct a sailboat to float on water and carry weights.  We will be working on these over several lab periods and I am excited to see what the students will come up with for their sailboats.
