Week of Sept. 30

Last week we continuing talking about the Holy Family and the students created a book showing how the Holy Family showed love for others and God and then how they show love for others.  This week we will begin talking more about Mary and practicing the Hail Mary.

We are finishing up our first unit in Adventures of the Superkids this week.  At the end of each unit we will be reading one of our Super-Duper magazines, so this week we will be reading our first one.  The Super-Duper magazines are non-fiction magazines that have some great articles that the kids really get into.  We will also begin unit 2 where our pattern words will be words with wh and th.

For math this week we will be creating AB, ABB, ABC, and ABBC patterns, adding doubles to 18, and identifying lighter and heavier using a balance.  We will be doing a lot of hands on activities with different manipulatives this week.

In Science we will be reading some of our dinosaur books and talking about different types of eggs.  We will be doing an experiment with eggs and vinegar.

Carnivores and Herbivores

We have been talking about what dinosaurs ate and that some were carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores.  To help us understand what carnivores and herbivores would eat I drew a big T-rex (our carnivore) and a big Brontosaurus (our herbivore) and the students cut out different kinds of food for our dinosaurs to eat.  While we know that these foods were not available during dinosaur time it still helped us to figure out what foods would go with the meat-eating T-rex and the plant-eating Brontosaurus.  Here are pictures of our dinosaurs.

We also figured out how many of our feet it would take to fill up a dinosaur footprint.  To do this students traced their feet and cut them out.  Then we put them inside the dinosaur footprint.  It took 32 to fill up the dinosaur footprint.

Last week in math we went to the Ipad lab and used the geoboard app to draw shapes.  It was great to see the kids enjoying drawing on the geoboard app, even later in the week.  This week we will be looking at dividing things in half, graphing on a pictograph, counting, and writing addition sentences.

This week in our dinosaur inquiry unit students will be comparing the sizes of dinosaurs to other dinosaurs as well as to themselves.  They will work together to measure their own heights and then use our dinosaur books to find the height of different dinosaurs.  We will even compare our feet to dinosaur feet.  We will also talk about carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores.
