Week of October 1

This week in class we will finish up the first unit of Adventures of the Superkids and start the second unit.  Our spelling test will be on Tuesday, October 2.  Spelling homework will also be due on that day.

We have been talking about synonyms in class and the students are making "Synonym" Rolls during center time.

We had our second Mystery Reader last week.  The kids were very excited to find out who the reader was and loved the story "Dinosaurs Love Underpants."

The kids had a lot of fun last Wednesday eating ice cream and making a craft project with their 7th grade buddies.  Thank you to everyone that brought in ice cream for the party.

This Thursday, October 4th, we will be celebrating the Feast of St. Francis with a prayer service and pet blessing.  The students are invited to bring in a favorite stuffed animal or a picture of their pet to be blessed.

This Friday, October 5th, we will be going on our first field trip of the year.  We will be going to Safety Town.

Chompers

Our dinosaur fully hatched out of its shell last Sunday morning.  We moved him to a larger bowl so that we could watch him grow.  Everyone also got a chance to touch him to see how he felt.  The students also voted on a name for our dinosaur.  The winning name was Chompers!  Here are the pics of Chompers.

Our Dinosaur Update

The dinosaur that we are hatching in our classroom is doing very well.  It is almost out of its egg.  By Monday our dinosaur will probably be completely hatched.  The kids have been super excited watching the dinosaur hatch out of it's egg.

Dinosaur Egg

To go along with our dinosaur unit, we are attempting to hatch a dinosaur egg.  Today we put it in water and tomorrow we should be able to see it start hatching.  Once it hatches then we will move our dinosaur to a larger container to watch it grow.

Tuesday is Back to School Night.  Please join us at 6:30pm.  Friday we will be having our second math test.  Also this week our first spelling list will go home.

Last week we finished up Welcome Back, Superkids.  This week we will be starting Adventures of Superkids.  The students have really been enjoying meeting the Superkids, hearing their songs and seeing the song animations on the Smartboard.

Our Dinosaur Inquiry Unit is going well.  Students were very excited when we opened up our dinosaur eggs.  We have been looking at features of some of the dinosaurs and this week we will be continuing to look more at the survival features the dinosaurs had.  The students will also be create their own dinosaurs.  I will continue to update what we are doing in our inquiry unit on the inquiry unit page that is linked to this page.

Eggs

This morning two eggs showed up in our classroom.  The students were very fascinated and intrigued by them.  Their curiosity was immediately piqued.  During science class the students made predictions about what they think is inside these eggs.  Here is a picture of our eggs.

These eggs are part of our first inquiry unit on dinosaurs that we are starting this week.  We will be talking more tomorrow about what we have been asked to do for the unit and write down some questions that we want to find out the answers for during the unit.

Things We are Doing

Last week was our first full week of school.  The kids were all very excited to start all their special classes (Latin, Computers, Art, Music, Spanish, and P.E.).

The kids are also loving the new Superkids program.  They enjoy hearing each Superkids song and have been requesting to hear some of them again and again.  I am very happy to see them getting into the Superkids program.  We will be hearing more of the songs this week and hopefully be able to also see the animation that goes along with each character.

This week I am excited to begin our first Inquiry Unit on Dinosaurs.  Throughout the unit we will be learning about what the dinosaurs looked like, what they ate, comparing and contrasting different ones and comparing and contrasting them to animals alive today.  It should be a very fun unit for the kids.

The SMARTboard in our classroom has also been a big hit with the students.  They all get to move their frog to the pond every morning for attendance.  We also use it frequently throughout the day for different activities.  The kids have gotten to play reading and math games on it already.
