Week of November 26

Sorry for the late post for this week.

This week in math we are learning about lines of symmetry in designs and will make our own designs showing lines of symmetry.  We are continuing to work on our addition and subtraction facts and making sure we watch what sign (minus or plus) the problem has before writing our answers.

In reading we are working on Unit 6 in Adventures of the Superkids.  In this unit we will learn about short and long vowel sounds.  We will talk about if a word has one vowel and it is at the end of the word, the vowel will usually be long (so, no, go, hi, be, etc.).

This week we are also responsible for doing the mass on Wednesday.  The students will be doing the reading, responsorial psalm, petitions, and bringing up the gifts.  You are welcome to join us for mass on Wednesday.  We will also begin talking about Advent and will make our advent wreaths this week.

Our Book Fair is also going on this week and the students have already made out their wish lists.  Also Parent/Teacher conferences are on Thursday so we will not have school.  Students should come to conferences too.

Thanksgiving Projects

The kids have worked very hard on various projects related to thanksgiving over the past couple of weeks and our classroom reflects their hard work.  From pilgrims and Indians to turkeys, the students have learned a lot.

Students disguised turkeys in order to protect them from becoming Thanksgiving dinner and I don't believe these turkeys can be recognized as turkeys at all.

The students also learned about the Pilgrims and Wamponoag tribe.  We discussed things that Pilgrim boys and girls would do and what boys and girls of the Wamponoag tribe would do.  Students then chose which one they would have liked to have been and wrote something they would have done if they were that person.  They then made either a pilgrim or Indian to go along with their writing.

We listened to the story "The Great Turkey Race" and then talked about what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story.  The students made turkeys to match the ones in the story and then wrote what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story.  These turned out great.

Students have also worked on putting sentences together that tell the story of the First Thanksgiving.  Once the sentences were together in the correct order, they then had to draw pictures to match the sentences.  The final product is the story of the Pilgrims and the First Thanksgiving.

We will be finishing up learning about the Pilgrims, Wamponoags and the First Thanksgiving this week.  In math this week the students will be identifying even and odd numbers.  In Superkids we will finish Unit 5 on Monday.  The students will also be writing a simple story about their characters that they worked on last week.  In Science we picked the title for our book and will be finishing up the cover design and then sending out our book to be published.  The kids have worked very hard on their writing and pictures for the book.  I think it is going to turn out great!  We have also begun looking at the properties of matter and the properties of solids in our science books.

Week of November 12

With Thanksgiving coming up very soon, we will be talking a lot about the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving in class.  The students will be able to go on a virtual tour of the Mayflower.  Also a special art/writing project will be going home this week.

The students will finish their pictures for our dinosaur book this week.  We will also begin looking at the properties of matter this week in science.

In Adventures of the Superkids the students will learn the rules for adding -ing and -ed to words.  When do you double the consonant and when do you just add the ending?  We will answer that question this week.  We will also be reading more stories in our reader.

This week in math the students will begin learning how to tell time to the hour and about capacity.  We will also continue to practice our math facts everyday.

Week of November 5

This week will be a busy one for us.  We will be finishing up our 4th unit in Adventures of the Superkids.  The students are also finishing up our first inquiry unit on dinosaurs.  Each student picked a dinosaur and they have been working on answering different questions about their specific dinosaur such as when it lived, what it ate, and what it used to protect itself.  We will be turning this information into a dinosaur book that we are going to have published.  The kids are doing a great job on them so far!

On Tuesday, we will be having at mock election of our own at school.  The students will listen to speeches from each presidential candidate and then we will vote for who we want to be president.  To go along with this the students will also be writing about if they were president.

In math, we have been working on addition facts (doubles, plus 1 and plus 0).  This week we will also work on subtraction facts (minus 1).  We have already been writing subtraction sentences for our some, some went away problems, but this week we will get our minus 1 subtraction fact cards and really start practicing them.  We will also be working on counting dimes along with our pennies.

Our Halloween Party went really well.  The kids decorated treat bags and passed out their candy in the morning.  After lunch we went downstairs for the Halloween Party.  They got to decorate cookies and play different games including mummy wrap, pin the nose on the witch, and bean bag toss.  Here are some pictures from our party.
