Somebunny Loves You

     Today students made bunnies.  I took pictures of everyone yesterday and today we used those pictures to make bunnies.  The kids were very excited about making these and I think they turned out so cute!

Stained Glass Crosses and Resurrection Eggs

     Monday, the students made beautiful stained glass crosses using tissue paper.  They are hanging up in our classroom windows and are looking great!




     Today the students worked on making their resurrection eggs.  Everyone got six eggs and then we went through the Easter story filling an egg to represent each part.
  • Egg One:  Jesus ate dinner with his friends. - bread crumb
  • Egg Two:  The next day Jesus died on the cross. - cross sticker
  • Egg Three:  He was wrapped in cloth and place in a tomb. - white tissue paper.
  • Egg Four:  A stone was place in front of the tomb. - rock
  • Egg Five:  Jesus' friends came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been moved.  The tomb was empty!
  • Egg Six:  Jesus is alive!  That's the sweet surprise of Easter.

Week of March 25

     This week we will continue to talk about Holy Week and Easter in religion class.  On Thursday we will have an all school prayer service at 12:30.  You are invited to join us in Church for the prayer service.

     In Superkids this week we will finish unit 4 on Monday with our spelling test.  Tuesday we will be having our reading test that will cover the words from units 3 and 4 as well as reading comprehension and planning a story.  We will begin our next unit which will focus on r-controlled vowels (ar, ir, or, ur, and er). 

     We will be having a math test on Monday.  We will also be working on writing money amounts involving the dollar sign, identifying 1/2, 1/3, and 1/6 and comparing numbers using comparison symbols (<, >, and =).  Students will also be looking at books about time and then will have a project to make their own time books.

     Science this week we will be talking about living and nonliving things.  In our science lab students will be working with different types of soil.

     For Social Studies this week we will continue working on our Communities Inquiry Unit after taking a break from it last week to visit some different countries using Google Earth and making our passports for the countries we visited.

     Also this week we will have our Easter Egg Hunt and do some craft projects for Easter.

Stations of the Cross

     On Friday, the first and second graders presented the stations of the cross to the rest of the school.  The students worked very hard on coloring their stations and reading their parts.  All of the students did an excellent job!

Week of March 18

     In religion this week we will begin talking about Holy Week so that we are prepared for it.  We also will be working with the second graders to prepare for stations of the cross on Friday.

     During Superkids this week students will continue to edit/revise and then publish their personal narratives about a super day that they had.  We will be learning about the sound that "aw" and "all" make in words.  Students will also read two stories from our reader this week.  We will also look at another one of our Super-Duper magazines this week.  Make sure to ask your child what it was about.

     In math this week we will look at subtracting 10 from a number, dozen and half dozen, estimating and measuring using feet, and adding 9.  Students will also continue to practice all of our addition and subtraction facts as well as counting money and telling time.

     Science this week will be focused on learning about taking care of the earth.  We talked about the natural resources that the earth has and also about types of pollution last week.  This week we will focus on how can we take care of those natural resources by reusing, recycling, and reducing.

     In Social Studies we are continuing to work on our Community inquiry unit.  This week we will talk more specifically about what a community is and look at our community.  We will be using Google Earth to look closer at the community we live in.

Week of March 11

     During religion this week we will be continuing to talk about the Holy Spirit and how the Holy Spirit helped the first church members.  We will also talk about how we are like the first Church members.

     In Superkids this week the students will be reading the story, "A Super Day at Happy Land" in their readers.  We will be working on identifying the main idea and supporting details from the story.  Students will also begin working on their own personal narratives.  This week we will begin planning them, by thinking about what the main idea will be and then coming up with supporting details for it.  We will also complete Unit 3 and begin Unit 4.  In Unit 4 we will be working with aw and all pattern words.

     During Math this week we will be measuring to the nearest inch, identifying and counting nickels, and ordering events by time.  We will also continue to work on our addition and subtraction facts everyday.

     In Science we have been discussing some natural resources.  This week we will look at a couple more natural resources.  In our science lab, students will get to look more closely at rocks and classify them into groups based on color, shape, size, or texture.

     We have also gotten into our Communities Inquiry Unit.  Students have been reading through different books on communities and community helpers.  They worked on finding facts from the books and labeling the source for each fact.  This week we will be comparing city and country communities.

Week of March 4

     This week in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday we will be mixing in some Dr. Seuss writing and art activities.

     In religion this week we will continue to talk about Lent as well as continue to discuss the Holy Spirit and how the Holy Spirit helps us to grow closer to Jesus.

     Monday will be our Unit 2 spelling test for More Adventures of the Superkids.  Spelling homework is also due on Monday.  We will be starting unit 3 where we will focus more on contractions.  We will also be reading stories and looking for the main idea and supporting details. 

     In Math this week students will be working on finding the missing addend (3 + ___ = 7), drawing congruent shapes/designs, and measurement using nonstandard units as well as measuring to the nearest inch.  Wednesday, March 6 we will be having a math test.

     In Science we are finishing up talking about the seasons and why we have the seasons.  This week we will begin talking about the Earth and different natural resources that the Earth has including rocks/minerals, soil, water, and air.  Our science lab this week will deal with exploring rocks using magnifying glasses and classifying them into groups based on size, color, shape, or texture.

     In Social Studies we have begun our second inquiry unit, Communities.  This week we will read and explore more with our community books.  Students will also begin to compare and contrast different types of communities beginning with comparing/contrasting country and city.
